Dr. Terry Simpson is a board certified general surgeon, who in addition to being renowned for weight loss procedures, is highly-experienced in performing an array of general surgeries. Pioneer
As a pioneer in the field of bariatric surgery, Dr. Simpson began performing laparoscopic bariatric surgery in 1994. Dr. Simpson ran a surgical residency program, teaching medical students to become surgeons. He also ran a Minimally Invasive Surgery program, teaching advanced surgical techniques to other surgeons. Dr. Simpson is also a pioneer in patient education, with several websites dedicated to providing information online for patients. He is one of the leading bariatric surgeons in the use of social media to broadcast timely, relevant, healthcare news.

Dr. Simpson has held several leadership positions in hospitals, including Chief of Surgery, Chief of Staff, and Program Director. He is also the treasurer of the Joint Operating Board of the Alaska Native Medical Center (the tertiary care hospital for Alaska Natives) and a Board member of SouthCentral Foundation, an organization of primary care that takes care of over 65,000 Alaska Natives and is known worldwide for their innovative relationship-based healthcare. Dr. Terry Simpson is a nationally recognized bariatric surgeon, particularly for his expertise in Culinary Medicine. He is the first weight loss surgeon to obtain certification in Culinary Medicine (which means he is up to date with evidence-based nutritional knowledge, but he can cook). Dr. Simpson was one of the first to adopt the one-anastomosis gastric bypass (sometimes called the mini-gastric bypass). In addition, Dr Simpson is LAP-BAND friendly, and while this is not a tool for everyone, he believes many benefit from it. Dr. Simpson was one of the first to offer the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (the sleeve) as a stand alone weight loss procedure. He is invited to lecture at presentations all over the country, has been featured on the news multiple times, and has made numerous television appearances.

Dr. Simpson is involved in research and clinical trials to further advance the field of bariatric surgery. He is currently involved in examination of the use of the Mediterranean Diet for long-term weight loss. He has adopted a course to integrate the Mediterranean diet into weight loss surgery patients.

Dr. Terry Simpson is on the board of SouthCentral Foundation, a primary care center for Alaska Natives in Anchorage. Their healthcare model is patient-centered and relationship-based. They were awarded the Malcolm Baldridge award for healthcare in 2011 and 2017 – the only healthcare entity to do that. Dr. Simpson takes that approach to his patients: “I spend more time teaching them to cook then I do operating on them.”
Dr. Simpson was awarded “Top Doctor” in 2009, 2010, and 2011 by Phoenix Magazine. He has been honored twice with the Golden Scalpel Award for “Excellence in Teaching” from the Maricopa Surgical Residency Program and the Positive Recognition Award for his work at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center.
